I.     Duties

Makes arrangements for transport of radioactive, mixed and hazardous materials from a generator/licensee to a disposal site, processing facility or holding facility licensed to accept the waste.

II.   Responsibilities

The broker is responsible for assuring that all federal, state and local regulations are complied with and that the final and/or interim destination’s acceptance criteria is met prior to release of the shipment from the client.

 II.    Educational Requirements

            Minimum: High School Diploma / GED and required

            OSHA, DOT and NRC/EPA approved Training  

Preferred:  The above plus; AA Degree and/or NRRPT certification

 III. Job Experience Requirement 

Minimum, three (3) years active broker experience with increasing levels of responsibilities; ability to act as the responsible party for record, have made in excess of 20 shipments or more. 

IV. Training Requirements  

A.   OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Waste Worker Training and yearly update

B.    Training as required by 49 CFR 172, Subpart H

C.    Blood Borne Pathogen Training

D.   Radiological Safety Training equivalent to that which would be required for a Health Physics Technician

E.    Attendance of a Radioactive waste packaging, transportation and disposal seminar such as offered by Chem-Nuclear or equivalent, minimum every two (2) years. 

V.   Continuing Education 

Brokers should make every effort to attend relevant LLRW Compact meetings and other forums designed to update generators and brokers on the current status of disposal and processing facilities as well as required permitting and acceptance criteria.
